The Big Idea: Man’s rebellious attempts to produce counterfeit religious and economic systems in opposition to God will be finally judged.
I. Babylon as the counterfeit religious system of the world will be condemned and punished – 17:1-18.
A. A picture of a woman who corrupts the religious system of the world – 17:1-7.
i. It corrupted great multitudes
ii. It seduced many of the earth’s rulers
iii. It intoxicated the earth’s inhabitants
B. The picture of the beast who fuels her efforts: - 17:8-18.
i. The Antichrist is the beast who was and is not but is about to come up from the abyss and then go to destruction
ii. Ruling as the 8th king, yet one of the 7 kings
iii. Co-ruling with 10 kings for one hour
iv. He will abandon and desert her, once in power, in favor of his own religious system – 17:16.
II. Babylon as the commercial center of the world trade will be destroyed – 18:1-23.
A. Babylon is condemned with finality – 18:1-3.
B. God’s people are separated – 18:4-8
C. The destruction of Babylon is lamented – 18:9-19
D. God’s justice is celebrated - 18:20-24.
