Rev. 1:1-8

“Blessed Are They Who Study Prophecy!”

I.                   God discloses to us what must take place (PROPHETIC) – vv. 1-3.

A.    The original source is God – v. 1.

B.     The mediator is Christ – v. 1.

C.     The medium is an angel – v. 1.

D.    The final recipients are believers – v. 1.

E.     The fulfillment will happen quickly – v. 1.

F.      The author is John – v. 1.

  1. The product/material is divinely commissioned – v. 2.

H.    There is a blessing for learning prophecy – v. 3.

 

II.                All theology is done within the context of a local church (PASTORAL) – vv. 4-6.

A.    The letter was written to the seven churches in Asia (see map on the other side) – v. 4.

B.     They are greeted by grace and peace from the Trinity – vv. 4-5a.

·         He who is, and who was, and who is still to come – the Father

·         The seven spirits who are before the throne – Holy Spirit

·         Jesus Christ – the Son

C.     Reflection on Christ’s accomplishment results in the attitude of gratitude – vv. 5b-6.

 

III.             The main thrust of the book - Jesus is coming back (POSITIVE) – vv. 7-8.

A.    The certain and unmistakable nature of His return – v. 7.

                                                              i.      It will not be missed.

                                                            ii.      It will not go unnoticed.

                                                          iii.      It is certain to take place.

B.     The certainty of His return is based on the truth of who He is – v. 8.

                                                              i.      First and last.

                                                            ii.      Eternal.

                                                          iii.      Omnipotent.

 

 

God informs the believers what to expect in the future and encourages them with the news of His Son’s return!
